Home visit #1 is in the books! We had our first visit last Friday and it went really well! I was unusually calm and carefree about it… I just felt an overwhelming sense of trust that God would take care of everything and, as always, He did. I was a teeny bit nervous when we sat down, but I think most people would be a little anxious having a semi-stranger interview you in your home, not knowing what to expect. Our caseworker (I’ll call her CW) is really nice and when she arrived, she asked us where we’d like to sit. We chose the kitchen island since it’s a nice big surface. And, I had put out snacks and snacks are always good! She didn’t walk around or inspect the house, we stayed in the kitchen the entire time. The visit took about 2 hours and it was simple and straightforward.
She started with Robbie first and had each of us walk her through our childhood, families, education, work, hobbies, things like that. Pretty general stuff. Then, she pulled out the large questionnaires that we each filled out the other week and I could see that she had highlighted a few areas. One area she highlighted was that I marked “worrier” under characteristics and she had to ask if it caused me any problems, if I could function, etc. Haha! I started laughing and assured her, yes, I’m not incapacitated with worry and I marked it because, between the two of us, I’m the worrier. I’m the one who looks into things and looks at different outcomes, plans, that sort of thing. Robbie is the complete opposite, very go with the flow personality. I love that about him and we balance each other so well. So I didn’t take the inquiry personally… I realize that she has to ask and has to look into certain things.
I had no idea if I should serve food, but it was late enough in the afternoon that I thought CW might start getting hungry. And I wasn’t joking in my previous post… I put out chips and hummus! CW didn’t eat, but I think it was a nice option just in case.
For home visit #2, Robbie and I will each be asked to fill out our own questionnaire. Then, one of us will leave (go to another room, run an errand, go for a walk) while the other is being interviewed. Then we switch. More on that next week!
Home visit snacks (CW didn’t have any… but I did!)
